by law the gas company is supposed to inspect your appliance when they turn on the gas, call the gas co. not a do it yourself project without a little experience. if not the valve shut off and they use a pilot light, not electric light, try replacing the thermo-coupler, about $25 a piece. they are a small, thin tube, usually copper or aluminum. they run from the valve on the appliance to the place were the gas is light. it is a safety device that only allows gas to flow when the pilot light has warmed it up. TURN OFF THE GAS IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF. use teflon tape and check for leaks with soapy water

If you had the gas turned on by the gas co. it sounds like they didn't purge the air out of the system. Call them back to check. If the range has live pilots then remember you will have gas escaping through them eventually if you don't turn off the valve behind it.

Check to see if your spigots are turned on from the heater: if they are, then check to see if the heater setting isn't set to "vacation" or something to that effect. For the stove, check to see if the pilot flame needs to be lit inside the stove. Turn the gas on -- do you smell it? That's a good sign.

If you are not familiar with pilot lights, call your gas company and they will send someone out to help you.
