Caucasoid, *******, Mongoloid, Australoid, Capoid? I personally think there are more. I think there are about 5 or more different African sub species that I have seen, some that look more white, and some asian( It's silly to say South Africans with eye folds and similar facial structure to Asians are the same race as Ethiopians, or West Africans. I wouldn't group native indians with Mongoloids anymore even if they descended from Asians. I wouldn't group all Native Indians together either you can find many different sub species from North to South America. I wouldn't group Native Austrailians with South or North Indians. There are genetic differences between Hawaians and the Chinese for example. You even originally had different races of caucaians some that look somewhat Asian and some that look more ******* in facial structure like Mick Jagger. How many can you count? Please no stupid or irrelevant answers like 4 or it doesn't matter we're all humans.

How can you say only 3 are you a complete retard or what? A Native Austrailian does not fall into those 3. And I'm sorry but J Lo is not the same race as Bruce Lee. There is over 100.

You people are dumb! There is one human race which equals one species. There are over 100 human sub species or races, and I didn't say put anyone to death it is a scietific question and you people obviously know nothing about it therefore you shouldn't answer for points. If I am wrong than so was Darwin you guys are just stupid!

The word "race" has no *biological* definition. It is not an official biological classification.

The classification "race" is only applied to humans and is therefore not a general term of *biology*. It is not equivalent to "subspecies", which means a genetically isolated subpopulation of a species on its way to become a species on its own right. It is also not equivalent to "breed", which is the result of deliberate breeding effort.

Yes, there are genetic differences between, say people of Central African descent and people of Northern European descent, but these are better explained by geography and migratory patterns.

Almost no human populations have been completely genetically isolated from their neighbors. There is a smooth transition of interbreeding from one region to the next right around the globe. So there are no "boundaries" between "races." The very difficulties you describe in trying to figure out whether people from certain regions comprise a certain "race", or whether a "race" can be subdivided, are all due to the fact that there are no boundaries. Humans always interbreed with their neighbors.

Now, in all of this I'm speaking purely about *biology* (as this is the Biology forum). In sociology, race is a much bigger issue, as this brings in issues of culture and history (collective memory of past events). But from the point of view of pure biology, Homo sapiens cannot be subclassified into meaningfully defined "races."

Obviously this is a subject that many would rather not get into for fear of saying something unethical. But on the contrary I feel it is so great that we are different and diversity is a good thing. I see people who will not acknowledge that race can be a topic of discussion or otherwise we could could not all get along or something. That is unilateral thinking which when pushed to extreme becomes absolutism. I think people should assume their own racial heritage with pride and be respectful of that of others.
As far as how many different races. Actually one study on dna done over people from many different geographic locations in the world showed that two people at close geographical locations and same "race" will not more likely have dna that match better than either one of them each with two other people from a different world location and "race". For ex your school friend who is same nationality as you, same race might not be as closely related to you than some indian in the amazon forest when comparing dna's even tough your friend is same race as you and the man living in the wild is not. This is based on scientific data. So there is no easy answer to your question.

ONE! We are ALL HUMAN...Homo-Sapiens.

The polarizations and labeling first comes from regional areas whereby anyone coming INTO a region was SEEN as "different"...a "stranger".

As societies grew in numbers, the elite and/or the "rulers" of said regions used physical differences to control through fear and false information or partial information.

Regardless: We ARE all HUMAN. Much like birds, there are many families of birds but only one species....Birds.

This perverse obsession with RACE has given license to all kinds of atrocities. When this perversion is stopped, humankind will prosper and care for this planet and each other much, much better.

The concept of "Race" is an artificial social construct designed to differentiate humans based on such superficial things as skin color, eye shape etc. Cynically, race is used as a means of claiming the superiority of a group of individuals with the same set of artificially selected appearence characteristics at the the expense of other groups.

If you don't like this answer, too bad......it is fact. This IS the best answer whether you choose it or not.

There is only one race. It is called the Human Race. Anybody who believes otherwise has some major conceptual problems to overcome.

May be hundreds or may be none. All the supposed variations may be due to adaptations at a certain location over long periods of time of Homosapiens.
