The title comes from one line written by the main character near the end of the book. She says some thing about how great God is and in all the field of flowers he puts one small patch of the color purple and so many people just don't even notice.
The color purple, as (I so forget her name, the main character!) puts it... is a gift from God. Something incredibly beautiful that gets taken for granted and overlooked.
GREAT BOOK! Wish I had me copy with me, but it's in storage right now... could have told you the quotation exactly, page and everything had I had it!

When Shug and Celie discuss what God thinks of the way people look at His creations she exclaims: “ I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t even notice it.”

Could be interpreted as find the beauty in, and don't take for granted, the simple things around you.

THE MEANING OF THE TITLE

In chapter 73, Shug says that she believes that it angers God if a person walks by the color of purple in a field without stopping to notice and admire it.

The Colour Purple is an epistolary novel: that is, the book is written in the form of letters. The central character is Celie, a young woman who is sexually abused by her father (who, she later discovers, is her stepfather) and is forced to marry a widower with several children, who is physically abusive towards her.

Then her husband's mistress, singer "Shug" Avery, comes into the scene. Initially, Celie feels threatened by this effervescent, liberated version of femininity - a form that has previously been alien to her.

Like "Mr. ____", Celie's husband (Albert), Shug has little respect for Celie and the life she lives at first and continues in her lover's footsteps, abusing Celie and adding to her humiliation.

In time, however, the two women bond, and Celie gradually learns what it means to become an empowered woman in her own right, through both sexual and financial emancipation and she finds the strength to leave her tyrannical husband.

This book is often argued to address many issues which are important to understanding African-American life during the early-mid 20th century. Its main theme is the position of the black woman in society, as the lowest of the low, put upon both because of her gender and her color. The book also deals with the idea of how Celie finds true emotional and physical love with Avery.

Because of the novel's sometimes explicit content, it has been the frequent target of censors and appears on the American Library Association list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000 at number eighteen. [1]

TO ME THE COLOR PURPLE IS A COLOR OF UNRECOGNIZED BEAUTY AND BOLDNESS. EACH WOMAN IN THE NOVEL HAD IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE COLOR PURPLE.
Another way to look at the meaning of purple's significance is this. Purple is considered a ROYAL color. The characters while not officially "royal" were royal in their own ways. You don't need to be rich and well educated to be royalty, u have to be real.
purple is not a primary color, it signifies that she has goten away from her roots. Also, when one is beaten and obtained bruises they're usually purple. When one is blue, they are said to be sad--purple is like a deeper blue, more internal. Purple is a neutral color--she could have titled it the color black, but she didnt, b/c the book isnt about race--its about women. also, purple is the choice of 9 out of 10 homosexuals. finaly, maybe purple was just her favorite color--and i dont consider purple to be royal at all...you know what i consider to be royal? royal blue...
Purple is seen as a man's color and in this novel men rule women. Celies wish to wear purple is her wish to take control of her own life. In my opinion the novel is called 'The color purple' to symbolise the prodominent males and how Celie overcomes them to take control of her life.
