Are there special aftermarket locking gas caps that don't cause the check engine light to go on? The gas caps have a special keyway and don't just screw on. They are half twist bayonett type!

Most likely, it was cheaper to use the type of door mechanism they are currently using, instead of using the type of gas door that locks when you shut it and can only be opened by lifting the release lever inside the car. The Chevy dealer parts department might sell a locking gas cap that is specifically made for your vehicle so it fits tightly and won't cause the check engine light to come on. Otherwise, your only option is to buy an aftermarket gas cap.

I seem to remember that cap from the 50s. It turns and mates like a radiator cap. A locking version was made many yrs ago. Now a turning cap is used.

I would call some long time Chevy dealers. A search at J.C. Whitney turned up nothing but maybe a phone call to them will be helpful. They have been around a long time selling aftermarket parts.

GM quit making locking gas caps because they had to fashion an inline valve in the gas tank filler neck to prevent fuel leaking in a rollover. Its basically a rubber ball trapped in the neck which also makes it impossible to siphon gas out. Unfortunately they didn't consider that some of their customers would have/be nasty neighbors and its still possible to add foreign substances to a gas tank.
