You need something in writing!!!! They will claim that you abandoned your job to get out of paying unemployment which you deserve if you did not lose your job by not showing up or performance issues. Do not wait another day ,have them date it back to the day when you were told this. The unemployment will help until you are hired elsewhere or they call you back. I would speak to the owner myself. Forget the middleman. Take the bull by the horns!

Take a deep breath.
Get angry and throw some pillows at your bed or sofa.
Leave your house. Go out to eat lunch, go to a matinee movie.
Get some carry out dinner. Go home. eat, relax and go to bed.
Next day, get up and shower and start planning the rest of your work life. Update your resume. Call 10 friends and let them know that you are looking for a new assistant position and ask who they know who works for a growing company.
Take an inventory of your skills and what you need to learn.
Go to the library and get a book on a new skill. Check out some college courses.
Once you have a new job, continue to upgrade your skills. Then IF layoffs happen, you will be the last person they layoff. Better still, you can continue to find the better job at a growing company at a greater income.
Good Luck

Most workers in the US can be terminated without cause, meaning the employer does not have to have a reason to let you go. You probably don't have any rights except to any pay that they owe you. Worker's compensation is for when you get hurt on the job. Probably the best thing for you to do is to apply for unemployment benefits from your state and to start looking for another job. Don't piss off the people who laid you off; they may be able to give you a good reference for a new job

I think FL is a 'right to work' state. If that is the case then you should file for unemployement and start looking for a job. Ask for a letter saying that you are a good person, but the economic conditions were not enough to sustain the workforce. Then let it go. Your time will be much better spent working for a new job.

first of all worker's compensation is only if you were injured on the job, such as a fall..
you may be entitled to unemployment compensation, depending on how your state defines benefits. Most states requre you to work for at least one year, and many states require you to be working at full time.
Contact them and they will ask you about your work history and if you are eligible, begin the claims process..

Call the umemployment office. But be careful employers play dirty and tell a lot of lies because they don't want to pay the half of it that you deserve. Also if you feel your rights were violated than get a written statement from you boss of why you were layed off and go talk to a lawyer.

Did you work full-time? If not, you have no workers comp. If you were full time you can get it. Also, Florida is an "at will" state, meaning they can fire you just like they did and that's the end of it. You have no rights as a worker, unfortunately.

You should go into the office, and get the necessary paperwork..how do you know that what you are hearing on the phone is the truth.. go in and face the boss.. You will need forms etc anyway. They also have to give you severence pay.
Go into work..

Go to your local unemployment office and tell them the situation.
If they've done something illegal the state probably can step in a do something about that.
