Emmitt Smith in his prime was probably the best all purpose Running Back in NFL history, He is #1 in all time rushing yards and the only running back to rush for 1500 yards in 4 straight seasons. He was never known for it, but coaches who studied game film of him dreaded watching him knock down their safeties, linebackers and defensive ends while pass blocking. Not to mention the man had hands like crazy glue coming out of the backfield.

No disrespect to Tony Dorsett, but Emmit is easily one of the top 3 greats of all time with Walter Payton and Jim Brown.

Emmitt was pretty good. He had a great line and quarterback, but he could do more things than Dorsett. The reason Dorett did so well is that he played in a time when running the ball was really in the vangard and the Cowboys did it as well as anyone. Emmitt could come out of the locker room at half-time and tear the field up to put away a game.

Statistically, Emmitt beats Tony soundly in nearly every category. Emmitt rushed for the current all-time record of 18,355 yds with 166 TDs (also the all-time record for running backs), while Tony rushed for 12,739 yds and 77 TDs. The one thing that Tony has that Emmitt doesn't is the longest run ever from the line of scrimmage in the NFL (99 yds). What made it even more amazing was that the Cowboys were mistakenly short one man on the field during that play!

I'm not a big fan of comparing past players to current because the times were different, so I'll just say that Emmitt was more productive for a longer period than Tony. If that makes Emmitt better than Tony, then so be it. They both ended up in the Hall of Fame, so I guess they both ended up in the same place in the end.

Emmitt Smith probably looked better because he had better talent around him. You really can't compare them but you would have to say Emmitt because he has the most yards all-time. Nothing against Dorsett but his stats don't compare. Tony Dorsett, however, was faster than Emmitt.

You put Dorsett on those 90s cowboys teams and he would have smoked Emmitt. He was a helluva lot faster and he could catch the ball out of the backfield.
