I am currently trying to start an at-home business but my family tells me I will never do it. I know I can, I just have to keep working at it. The crazy thing is when I do, and I'm making money, they will want some. Being the good person that I am, I will give them some. However, I think they should have my back. I constantly tell them it would be great if I and they could be in business for myself, ans they could too because they hate their job and make little money like I do. So, I tell them why not try to make good money from home. But if they don't agree, they shouldn't try to make me feel bad for trying to better myself. So, I know one day I will start my business and I can't wait to see the stupid look on their faces. Has anyone ever proved anyone wrong whether it was graduating from college, or getting married, quitting smoking, or overcoming any obstacle?

Yes, my entire family believed that I was stupid (and I do understand why) when I didn't finish college - gave it up after two years of a four-year scholarship; got married and had 3 wonderful children. They all told me it was a horrible mistake and I'd never get the kind of job or make the kind of money I could have with a degree. Well, long story short, I'm well into a 6 figure income now surpassing cousins of mine who have master's degrees. I've traveled all over the world and I always knew I could do anything I put my mind to. Even if I could I wouldn't go back and change a thing because of the blessings I've received - and not the money, but the 3 beautiful human beings I was blessed to have brought into the world - all grown now, all wonderful young adults, successful and never in trouble.
As for your family. They say you should never go into business with your family. It often ends in disaster and leaves families devastated. Focus on making your business successful and taking care of yourself. It's up to you whether to help your family or not, but don't let them rain on your parade and don't feel obligated to take care of them either when they come around with their hands out if they have not been supportive of you!

Well, I think that if you have enough determination, you can achieve anything. Although what I accomplished was not as important as starting a business, I can semi-relate to you. I was in a contest and one of my "friends" was sitting next to me. His girlfriend was competing against me so he was whispering in my ear "Come on. Just quit now. You know you can't win." Finally, I turned around and slapped him right in the face. It shut him up really quickly and I went on to win the contest. Although I wouldn't advise slapping anyone in the face, just ignore them and you will prove them all wrong!

When my dad was a college freshman, he was a pretty good student, but he was one of the youngest in his class, and at times he struggled. His bio professor made a remark to him that he thought he'd never get through the semester, much less make anything of himself.
Dad went on to become a very good doctor, head of his dep't at the hospital, a well-loved, well-rounded decent human being, with a wide variety of skills outside his profession, and father of seven!!

Yep sure did. My family was amazed when I went back to school after 15 years of being a single working mother. After my divorce from a very, very abusive husband I was working myself to death working two, sometimes three jobs just to take care of my kids and myself.
I decided to go back to school and my parents said that the doubted that I could do it after being out of school for so long and with having to raise a family.
I went and got my GED and then enrolled in the local college and got a degree in business management, with a 3.75 GPA
While working full time, taking care of my kids and going to school nights.
My parents and my kids are so proud of me for my accomplishment.
But even though my parents did not think that I could handle it, they stood by my side and encouraged me and helped me with my kids.

My husband was born with dyslexia. When he was a child they didn't understand these kinds of disorders. His mother would tell him he was just lazy and wouldn't amount to anything. She was also physically abusive. After high school graduation, he went into the Army and fought in VietNam, got a good paying job when he got out and was a wonderful husband and father to our two children. He credits his success to her, just to show her she was wrong about him. Even after all of his successes, she told him that he only succeeded because of me. She's passed away now, but I still believe he succeeded in spite of her. I still resent her.

I could consider myself just like you, people like us are called optimists and sadly the people who put us down are pessimists so DREAM ON!!! keep striving. I want to start my own business possibly called Cauvel Auto, making cars that float on water, in the air and on land "Hovermobile", these are just my thoughts which usally are disregarded "If you can think of it it's possible." So good luck to you. And to answer your Question yes, at certain times in my life, but the biggest achievement is soon to happen to those who Excel!!!!!!!!!

When I went to college for engineering, my uncle thought I would never make it. But much to his surprise I made the Dean's list every quarter the first year. It really felt good.

Anyone who tries to drag you down has nothing to offer. They either gave up on themselves long ago and expect you to do the same, or they resent anyone else getting ahead of them. Or both.
Consider everything they say as just noise in the background, and pursue your plan. It'll be fun. Victory will be fun.
