you should never get a piercing done on your ears with a gun! always with needles. the guns are not 100% sterile which is an incresed risk of infection. also there is less blood flow up to the cartilage which takes it longer to heal and more prone to infections.

needles are hollow and make a clean cut through the skin and are practically 100% sterile.
guns only push the jewelry through pushing the skin to the side and not taking it out. leaving the skin to develop into scar tissue.

i also know people who have gotten their cartilage pierced with a gun and have a small unattractive bump right where the hole is. where its an over growth of scar tissue called a keloid. these do not go away on their own and require sugery in order to get rid of them. many of my friend have alos had to take out their piercings since they got them done with a gun because they were so painful and got really irritatd that they didnt want to deal with them anymore.

i advise lookign into a local piercing/tattoo shop checking them out and making sure they use a new needle on every customer and everything is sterile.

I have my upper cartilage done with a needle. their pierced it with a 14 g needle which is about 1.6mm in diameter and put in a captive bead ring that was 16 g. it heals fine as long as you follow the after care instructions. do sea salt soaks every day for at least 10 m inutes with warm water and non iodized sea salt. instead of putting a cup on my ear and riskign getting water in my ear it to soak some cotton balls int he solution and hold them up there, it works just the same way.

but the piece of jewelry i would reccomend is to get a straigth barbell just so it wont be easily caught on things.

good luck=)

remmeber needles only(they look scary but are less painful than guns), no guns!!!

i have never heard of anything called cartilage snapping though? is the top of your ear collapsed or what? mayeb its the noise you heard when you got it pierced with the gun? not sure what you mean..

Um, cartilage doesn't snap. If your cartilage is snapping you would be in pain and a lot of trouble. I think what you mean is your joints are popping. It's the same as knuckles cracking. It is harmless. It is actually the fluid in the joints that causes this sound. It does not require a cure. Now if that popping sound you hear is accompanied by pain that is a different story entirely. Go to a doctor NOW!

Never heard of cartilage snapping... Heard of worn and or torn cartilage. Are you certain you're just not hearing the cracks associated with oxygen in the joints? If thats all it is then you have no worries -- but as another answer suggests -- taking glucosimine can't hurt
