Try the classified ads for people selling washer and dryers. Also check garage sales, second hand stores. Or find a store that sells floor models (a.k.a scratch and dent stores). They may not have the box and have a few dings and scratches but they are still new. I once bought a fridge from Lowe's off the floor because it was the last one of that model in stock. It had a huge scratch on the side and I had 300 bucks taken off the price. I didn't mind the scratch because it was going up agaisnt a wall that no one would see.

Check your yellow pages for a used appliance store. We got our washer and dryer (Kenmore, I believe they are 2 or 3 years old) for 350.00 total, and they came with a 90 day warranty. We've had them over 5 months now and haven't had any problems. Well, except the fabric softener thing keeps coming off, but that's so easy to put back on.

Check the want ads for a refurbisher of washers & dryers. They won't look all shiny and new, but they will (in most cases) work fine, and for hundreds of dollars less.

Try used appliance stores. Also Habitat for Humanity has started opening stores that sell all kinds of home improvement stuff as well as new and used appliances, also your money is going to a good cause.
