Necessary, no? What things are necessary though?
These parades are a way to make a statement, celebrate themselves, and show pride. Has a parade somehow re-routed itself through your house? Were you forced to watch one?
An excuse to hook-up? Does anyone need an excuse to hook-up with anyone? Now I am completely straight... Every weekend I go out I see hundreds if not thousands of straight people go to one place, many with the intention or hopes to 'hook-up'. They are called bars and clubs. Yet, when you put a group of gay people together and you make it sound like they are making some completely devious plot.

Judging by your verbiage I can tell which way your leaning. Here is my input.
When we place others in situations that make them "special" we begin to erode our social foundation. Furthermore, it just creates an environment which is perfectly mirrored in the replies to your post: those for the privelege of "special dispensation" will spout platitudes about free-speech and/or victimization. And those who would not approve of "special" status for specific strata of society spout venom and vitriol.
Note that I live in the Bay Area and have noticed that the seemingly innocuous events like "Gay Pride" parade and "Critical Mass" are usually the cause of greater violence and confrontation than any other demonstrations. Take it for what its worth but at both events I have seen the "peaceful" paraders instigate several melees.

no parades are NECESSARY
parades are for celebration or to make a statement
and, in most places, they have indencency laws that if they would just enforce them, would cause the arrest of 3/4 of the people in an average "gay" parade
I think in many ways we were smarter back in the 50's

I don't think they are necessary. Why aren't there any "Straight Parades?" If straight people can't have their own day and their own parades then I don't think gay people should have one either.
