I have a water softner at my house so i hook the hose up to the softened side of the water outlet. (as most of the outside hose bibs do not use the softened water as it will kill plants) and it works great. There are also some softeners you can buy for car washing like the Mr Clean products and McGuires i thinks sells one also. they both screw on to the end of your hose.

Take the spray nozzle off your hose and under medium water pressure let the water pour out of the house without splattering. The water will stick together and sheet off instead of beading up on the car.

Try a little Jet Dry, the rinse additive for your dishwasher.
Works well.
