Front wheel drive, your car is better controlled in icy conditions.

I had a rental car with FWD in Philadelphia. I went to pick up friends in Mount Airy, and on my way there I had to go up a very icy hill. I lost control of the car and it "spun" out." The FWD held it in place and I didn't go crashing into Lincoln Drive, ruining everyone's Saturday night.

Rear wheel drive is useless. It's on Volvos and most SUVs. I was on the East Coast and I hit black ice in my SUV. I didn't think about putting in the 4x4 because I didn't see the ice. Going around curve, the car turned turtle (flipped).

Four wheel drive is wonderful. High and low. Wonderful control of the car in all conditions.

rwd sucks in the snow but it is faster on dry pavement.
Rwd is good for towing because the wait goes on the drive tires
4wd is good for off road and snow but sucks on gas even when not using it and 4wd equipment cost more to make
front weel drive is most popular because it is cheap and great in the snow.
