I may be moving to Texas in 11-12 months, for two reasons: 1. I LOVE Texas! 2. I HATE where I live, Kentucky (Louisville-Lexington-Frankfor... metro area.) I may be participating in a domestic exchange program at universities in one of three cities: 1. College Station (near Houston), 2. San Marcos (near Austin and San Antonio), and 3. Denton (near Dallas and Fort Worth.)
For a college kid in a small town in Kentucky, which do you think would be the best fit for me. I'm not an active contributor and spectator of the arts, but I do like to have access to it. I'm not a huge shopper, but want to be close to city amenities. I'm used to living in the suburbs and not inner-city, so I want something likewise (except, of course, Texas' small-town friendliness is unmatched, in my experience. TX is MUCH friendlier than KY, even in the cities!)
Which of these areas do you suggest? Should I live in these towns, or commute to school there from one of the nearby larger cities? Thanks!

I think you will find texas is not as frioendly in mos tplaces as kentucky. In some areas it's mostly mexican and they not only don't welcome whites but make it hard for them. I have 1/2 mexican nephews houston and even they are scared of the mexican street gangs(as well as black gangs and drugs)
The large texas cities are very dangerious and often travel cost will off set any advantages to living in large cities.
If you have to move I would consider a small college town. It's
cheaper, safer, and you would only have to commute to visit the large cities.

I lived in a small town in Texas most of my life, then moved to Dallas about 4 years ago. I'm personally not a huge fan of Dallas, It has a pretty high crime rate and is super busy all of the time. I would pick San Marcos if I had the choice. It's a beautiful city and it's big enough to have just about anything you need but not huge and over crowded. Plus it's close enough to Austin and San Antonio (two other great cities) to enjoy the things they have to offer. Good Luck.

I live in Houston and I have to say that College Station is a very long drive away from here. All in all Austin is probably the most fun city in Texas, but I like Houston too. Of course, I'm more of a big city kind of guy so I can't reccomend much to you, but Austin has a great music scene.

San Marcos is Nice. The closer to Austin the better. Plus you have the river right there. If you have to move near a big city I'd go with Houston. Closer to the Bay and people are nice.

San Marcos is a cool college town, just down the road from Austin and all it has to offer. You could attend college there, as well. Some of best looking women in a state full of beauties are there.

I live in Texas and I suggest Denton (near Dallas and Fort Worth). Denton is a great college town plus you have easy access to the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavs, Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, plus great music. I could go on and on...check us out.

I've lived in Denton, and I came from a small town in west TX. I found it to be the perfect middle ground between small town and big city because you still run into people you know and talk to them but you're still pretty close to whatever you want to do. It's also really laid back and we've joked that it's one of the laziest towns in America. People are non-judgemental and there are a lot of fun cool people here, and you're free to be yourself. But it really depends on which college suits your career needs best. But I can tell you that I love Denton.

I actually moved down here (Sulphur Springs, Tx) from La Grange, Ky, myself. My recommendation would be a town close enough to the city, but far enough, if you know what I mean. I don't know where you plan on moving (Texas is a big state), but you have plenty of big cities to choose from. I prefer east Texas myself. However, Austin is a pretty neat town, although, like most cities, overpopulated.

San Marcos is a nice area and Austin is the college party town, nice country around there. Houston and Dallas are the pits. you can't walk the streets there.

San Marcos, most definitely. Austin is a very friendly city and much less scary than Houston or Dallas. Look me up when you're down here. :)
