Watermelon: Slaves working in the hot fields were sometimes given watermelon because the sugar brought their energy levels up, it was cheap (homegrown) and kept them from getting dehydrated. The slave owners laughed over how much black people loved watermelon and the stereotype stuck.

Fried Chicken: This is a form of meat that is much cheaper than beef. Families who were economically deprived had it often. They learned how to cook it so that it wasn't boring. This led to another stereotype.

Racism is so unintelligent that it grasps at anything at all to make the racist feel superior. Don't let it get to you. Who you are cannot be defined by anyone ever.

That stereotype came from the Jim Crowe days, but I don't know the basis for it.

I love fried chicken (my Mom's not KFC) and I love watermelon even more!

I guess I'm an embarrassment to my race :-(

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve fried chicken and watermelon busts with the neighbors. Soul food is just 'food' for a lot of us white southerners.

I have often wondered that myself. Fried chicken, watermelon & tap dancing. Stereotyping I guess.
