I tried playing around in Control Panel...display....but it still looked off

Learn what the native resolution of the monitor is. Non widescreen might be something like 1280 x 1024, but a widescreen might be 1280 x 800. Once you know what the native resolution is, see if you can set it to that in the control panel. If necessary look for your model screen on the manufacturer's website.

See if there's an installation cd that came with your monitor. If not, find the manufacturer's website for any drivers you may need.

Right click on your desktop then select 'properties' then click on the 'settings' tab. You can ajust your res to widescreen mode

on the monitor adjust height and width till it looks right
