I sent myself something to finsih from school. I opened the email and then downloaded the attachment. when it said hit open or save I hit open (Though I should've hit save) so i saved my work a couple of times and then closed it. After i closed it I thought "Wait, where did it save to?" My finacee was trying to help me get it, so he had me do exactly what I had done to begin with. I opened the email attachement and then hit save. Well, by doing that I "Saved" my half done project over my fully finished project! Is there any way to undo my save and go back? I REALLY need help!! It was like 3 hours of work!

Thanks!

Are you certain it saved over your fully finished project?
If you save a file of the same name, by default, your pc should have a popup window asking if you want to "overwrite" your existing file. You then must choose "yes" or "no".
If you didn't do this, then your other file must exist under a name that is not identical.

Go to your start menu and choose search. You can search for your file name or you can search for all files created within the last 1 day.

There is also a chance that your program creates an auto-backup file. You will find this by peforming the search also. Auto back-ups are just titled "Auto-backup____" The blank being the original file name.

Good luck. In the future, you may want to create your own backup files just in case. It's good to always have a copy, as files can also become "corrupt" and not open.

When you hit save the next time did it asked you to replace the existing file, if so and you press yes, nothing can be done. Otherwise try searching for the file in temporary internet files. All the attachment opened from the internet/email direct are temporarily saved under that folder. However, this folder is hidden therefore you need to select "show hidden folders" in control panel "folder options"

FYI the files saved in the temporary folder does not bare any proper name therefore the best bet will be to sort by date and look for all the recent "word" files.

GOOD LUCK!

Depending on your system - Windows ??, you might be able to open the temp file under your Windows folder and be able to restore it by checking each of the temp files to find the older version. The temp files do not share the same file name as the document itself, but are numbered to go to the one that has a time around that of the one you worked so long on - it will be a bigger temp file than the newer one. This used to work in the older versions of Windows - haven't tried it with Windows XP, etc.Good luck!

P.S. you should have a folder setup specifically for attachments and always rename them to something recognizable when you download.

When you work from a file opened via e-mail, it'll typically save in a temp folder.... I know that mine will save as XXXX (2) or XXXXX (3), I don't know how yours is set up, but you need to get into that folder and check it out. To get to this folder, go back into word, when you hit "FILE" it should have your most recently saved items listed at the bottom (use the arrow at the bottom if you can't see all items).

If it came up with "would you like to replace existing file" your SOL.

if it came up and said, this file already exists. replace existing file? .......and you clicked yes, then it saved over it. there is no way to get it back. im really sorry!

but next time, if you can't figure out where you saved it, click the start menu then click search. (it should be right under help and support, and above run). the click search for files and folders. then type what you saved it as, like, school project, or whatever you called it. then it should pop up. then you could have clicked it, then did a save as, to save it on your desktop or mydocuments, or somewhere you knew where it was.

sorry! i hate when that happens!!!

Ya thats a pickel.

If you are on a Windows XP computer. There is an option to roll back the system.

Called System Restore, can you can restore the computer back to when your file was last saved if you remember the time.

Go to Help and Support in the start button and type in "system restore wizard" click on the first link that appears. go through the steps.

hope that helps.

Try this:
Click on "Start", bottom left
go to "search" and type in the name of file..any of it will do
make sure you choose the option "All files & folders"

if there's more than 1 copy of your work, and I think there just might be..it'll show up

beyond that, I'm at a loss..I don't know too much about these darned machines.

if you saved it without saving it to a particular folder, its probably saved in your temp. folders. These can be hard to find. I would do a "computer" search (click start, click search) including hidden and sub-folders for the most likely file name. Its time consumine but hopefully you're able to retrieve it. Good luck!
