They are just doing their job just like anyone else who goes to work and do their job. They have no idea that you have had a bad day or that other people have called you several times and you are sick of them. If you just say put me on the "Do not call" list which will take about 30 days to actually come off the list but it is better than cursing or just hanging up because you will get a call back.

I don't hate the actual telemarketers themselves, but I do hate whomever thought of telemarketing in the first place. Yes, they are doing their job, but the are more times than not rude. when you answer the phone they just start talking, they do not ask you if you are busy, or if it is a good time, they just start running off at the mouth. I agree with what the other people have said, too, they can barely speak English and after coming home from work and wanting to relax, I do not want to play interpreter. It is also true that they usually call at dinner, or as soon as you walk in the door and have an armful of groceries or what have you. It's annoying and as soon as you say (politely) that you are not interested, they hang up on you or worse, try to convince you for 15 more minutes. I used to be polite to them because I realize they are just doing their job, as you mentioned, but I too have turned to acting a fool on the phone. When they ask "how are you" (and it's a rhetorical question, believe me) i tell them i've got cramps so bad, my lights are about to be cut off, my husband and I were just getting ready to have sex, my kids are getting on my last damn nerve and anything else I can think of and i run it off as quick as can be, without taking a break for a breath so they can't cut me off. The polite ones will be sympathetic, others aren't so nice. If you don't want to know how I'm doing, don't ask.

Telemarketers get a bad rap for several reasons:

1. Many mispronounce the customer's name
2. The delay as the autodialer connects the customer to the call center rep.
3. The fact that many call centers dial repeately for several days in a row.
4. The list goes on and on...

It's usually not the Rep's fault, but many people want to spend their home time with their family, not listening to a telephonic commercial.

If you ask to speak to their supervisor as soon as you realize they are a telemarketer, you will probably never hear from that company again. I hate them too. Especially the ones that want to send you so many magazine subscriptions for free and talk so fast you can't get a word in.

I think that they are an insult to my intelligence.

Surely, if I am interested in a product, I am perfectly capable of acquiring it without them calling me at dinner time. I especially can't stand it when they are peddling a high end item like windows. Do you really think that if I wanted to spend thousands of dollars on windows for my house that I would buy them from some unsolicited company?

If I wanted to make that type of purchase, you can bet that I would research exactly what I wanted, shop around comparing prices and then come to a decision. I don't need someone I don't even know calling me to give me a hint that I may actually want something that I have not asked for.

By the way, I walk upright and feed myself without assistance too.

I don't hate telemarketers. They are a great source of amusement. I like to toy with their minds.

Here's my favorite telemarketer joke (I made it up myself):

How many telemarketers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
The answer is "one"....which, incidentally, is how many it takes to screw an 80 year old lady out of her life savings.

The first thing that comes out of a telemarketer's mouth.

"Hello, this is_______, how are you today?" "Hello, my name is ________, is the owner of the house available right now?"

They act like they're your friend when you know they just want your money. They should say.

"Hello, I'm sorry to bother you, are you free right now?"

People would be less angry if it was like that. I guess... And the "don't call list" should happen RIGHT THEN AND THERE. No 30 day pending list because then it becomes harassment.

I love telemarketers. It's like free phone sex lines. I just keep talking dirty to them (yes, male and female). I have had some of them get really pissed off at me, and yet, they don't hang up either.

I can really get a good vibe off them just by asking what they're wearing. From there, total improvisation.

The fact that you are asking that question means you have never been called often enough by telemarketers.

i too encountered this problem when I worked in a call centre. Some people are just that way inclined I guess.

Don't take it to heart, they are not angry at you as such but rather the company you represent. Remember they don't know you personally.

i also hate telemarketers on my good days, and when i only get one telemarketer calling me. that do not call list has helped tremendously though, even though i still get their calls sometimes.
