I ask them what they like to do with others. Some people have no social outlets and that makes being friends harder. You also find out what talents they can share.
I ask how much schooling they have had and what they think about the school of hard knocks. College graduates are really against workers who have learned the hard way. A formal education in any field does give one a lot of information, perhaps they fear old knowledge because they slept thru that class? Meeting one who doesn't is a lifelong dream. So thats generally my goal. If you have a goal share it because it puts the most important cards on the table. Do they want to be friends too, or work with you or for you.

I have this weird fear of new students at school. I ask ceratin questions so I won't feel that I have competition. Such as "What clubs will you join?" and "What do your parents do?". I start school on Monday, and there are supposed to be a lot of new kids. I'll have to put it in high gear. But I HATE HATE HATE it when people that I already kind of know ask me what music I like. To me, though I love music, is purposeless.

To get to know someone, I would ask what they do for a living, what they like most about the job, if that's where it leads, what they like to do on their days off, do they have a big family, do they have hobbies? Things like that will open other areas to ease into. Its always a good idea to ask if they mind if you ask about their personal life if you want to know about marriage and family.
