I believe there were 4. Two of them were flown into each of the World Trade Center towers in New York, one was flown into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and the other crashed in Pennsylvania, never reaching its planned destination.

4, I believe the goverment thinks that 6 more where to go that day, bause the terrorist did not think that the FAA would stop all flights.
