As far as question one is concerned, it's just all a part of the game. It could be that women like to think a man is above gossip, meaning better than someone who gossips. Typically, a gossip doesn't understand that's what they're doing. It's a double standard that's applied to men, so there's one you have to get used to. The second question is simple. Men are typically stronger than a woman. Not to incite women who can defend themselves, I'm making a generality. Society looks down on men who are violent towards women. Again, it's called being a man. Violence of any sort against another is deemed uncivil. Why not accept the fact on both questions, and live up to what everyone expects? The idea would be "keep your mouth shut and be a man."

To answer your question...no one ever said it was ok for either sex to do either of those things to one another. As far as the hitting goes, that's just how some men were brought up. They were told not to hit girls. So if you really wanna know, ask your mother or anyone's mother who taught them that growing up. The real answer to that question is it's not ok for anyone to hit anybody male or female because either sex can go to jail for it.
If you wanna look at it that way, you might as well say why is it ok for a man to sleep with as many women as he wants and be considered a man or a player but when a woman does it, she's a skank or whore? I don't agree with that either. In my eyes, they both nasty, male or female...So whoever said it was ok to put a guy or girl down and yadda yadda (the rest of your question) is misinformed.

It's never ok to hit a girl because guys are usually stronger, and will do a lot more damage than that of a girl.
I think if a girl talks bad about some one she is just trying to make herself look better, she is also trying to make her self feel better. Most people who make fun of someone are usually seeing something in the other person which remindes them of themselfs.
You need to be above acting like the other person who is try to hurt you

omg! you guy's are stronger than us girls! a lot of you put us down. we need to get mad sometimes and we need to do this because if we don't guy's will walk all over us! and for the second part come on! girls are more soft and small but some girls can pack a punch! Its not ok for girls to put down guys or hit them...it never has been in my book and i've never done it to any of my BFs. anyone who tells you this is true is stOoOpid so don't listen to them.
Don't hit girls though, or anyone for that matter. Violence begets violence. If someone hits you or verbally abuses you, don't contribute to it, just walk away.

it's not ok to talk about anyone but its human nature.but when some guys talk about a girl they get very nasty and most guys tell little lies to make them feel better but they dont realize how bad their lies here these girls.And any man who hits a female is nothing but trash in my book have you ever heard of walking away remember it takes a bigger man to walk away then stand there and fight

Sometime..hit back, take back ia a must but it depend on the situation you are facing. In the context of friendship, the concept of HIT BACK is not relevant.
