Because the rich can dodge the draft or get money in other ways. Send the Bush twins to Iraq.

I noticed that one responded to this question by saying that in the U.S.A. we have an all volunteer force and no one sends the poor anywhere. This is only partially true. The poor often feel they have no other choice but serve in order to achieve a better life. The college benefits offered by the military are the reason most people volunteer. The premise is endure hell now and if you live we will send you to college. The average number of young poor in America is far greater in the military than on our college campus'. I suppose it makes the death toll easier for us to bear if we can say they volunteered to die. I would much prefer a vocation/profession in the military be equal to or excel any private vocation/profession in pay and benefits. If that were the case perhaps we would not have the constant turn over in personnel. The money we spend in recruitment and training could be used to improve the pay and benefits. If we do not have the money then we should resume the draft. Every American male and female should bear the cost of freedom. It seems to me if we are not willing to reinstate the draft then a law should be passed stating you either serve two years are pay ten percent of your income for two years towards increasing the pay/benfits of those that are. I am aware the rich would escape the military, but they are doing it anyway. Within a decade this will be a mute point because when countries like Venezuela, Iran, Syria, China and North Korea get their alliance in order the draft will return out of necessity.

The military, historically, has been a way of advancement for people who did not have any familial weallth or power.

Back in the day, with an agreeable commander, one had the right to loot defeated towns, fortressess, cities, countries, etc., and thereby gain material possessions. Soldiers were also often paid better than the average person, who had to try and survive through marketing whatever skills they had, or could learn. Then, too, as a soldier, if one survived, one could sometimes advance through the ranks, sometimes achieve a title or lands.

Now, education and job training is the really big enticement for most to join the military, things which are increasingly prohibitively expensive for average men and women, and require putting oneself deep into debt, sometimes effectively sabotaging one's future for years if the job market is iffy.

It is not coincidence, that this administration has cut federal funding for students. Don't look to see any real government effort to make education more affordable, until those in power no longer need cannon fodder.

In any society, people who want a better life will do whatever they feel gives them the best chance of achieving the life they want. For some, that means promising to serve their country in the armed forces, a promise most make when they are young and too trusting, believing that their government will not gamble needlessly with their lives. What a shame, when their government is unworthy of their trust.

because the poor are in the army

of course, the officers in most armies are not from the poorer classes

the bulk of enlisted people usually are

why, because you don't take a job as an enlisted person in an all volunteer army unless you can't get a better job

during really serious wars (like WWI or II), or other times when a draft is required, in the U.S. everybody was equally likely to be drafted, poor or rich, but the poor were still more likely to enlist

Because as long as there is injustice in the high places, that I mean governments and leaders it will persist. Along with the common people who become complacent and apathetic, there will always be inequality.

This is a reason why no one should turn a blind eye to politics. The African American people of the 1960s did not turn a blind eye. Its like their our guide today. They made themselves heard and made change. But as soon as you ignore the leaders and what they govern over you, their influence starts to trickle down without you knowing about it. As we speak, there is a war going on, and there are ways that politicians are using their influence. Of course, its not all bad. Of course, it creates order, and liberty and good things. What I mean is, if its not fair than speak up and do something about it. I should practice what I preach because I didn't go to any of the Los Angeles marches for immigrant rights, but that is a prime example. I just know these things, but I have to live them. I'm a passive activist actually.

All I'm saying is we cannot be apathetic, especially not in a time like this.

because the goverment feeds the poor with lies so they will go

Why do they always send the poor?
Barbarisms by Barbaras
With pointed Heels
Victorious victories kneel
For brand new spanking deals

Marching forward hypocritic
And hypnotic computers
You depend on our protection
Yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth
La la la la la la la la la la
Everybody is going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancing in the desert
Blowing up the sunshine
Kneeling roses
Disappearing into Moses' dry mouth
Breaking into Fort Knox
Stealing our intentions
Hangars sitting, dripped in oil

Crying freedom!
Handed to obsoletion
Still you feed us lies from the tablecloth
la la la la la la la la la la
Everybody is going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancing in the desert
Blowing up the sunshine
Everybody is going to the party
Have a real good time
Dancing in the desert
Blowing up the sunshine
Blast off, it's party time
and we DON'T live in a fascist nation

Blast off, it's party time
And where the **** are you?
Where the **** are you?
Where the **** are you?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?

The people I know and who are in the military are not from poor families. They are from middle and upper middle class. They certainly did not have to go into the military. They didn't do it for the education, some of them already had a college education. One of them was a star football player at his high school, was a good student, could have just gone to college but instead he joined the military and died in Iraq a couple of months ago.

Because the poor need help to go to college. They know what they are getting themselves into when they sign up. It's like signing up for a credit card and not expecting to pay the bill. Come on, these people are volunteers. Why would the rich volunteer, they are too self absorbed.

i am reminded of a song travis tritt had out a few years ago. it was something like this , the rich man dances while the poor man pays the bill. i never truly trust a rich man. and i don't think the rich man respects the poor.

In my country, all the men have to go through the army. No matter whether you're rich or poor, every single one of us has to go through. So not only the poor has to go to war.
