the really big ones do verify and if it is a minimum they might be a little flexible if your resume and/or experience is really good.

Yes. I've seen the background check that my employer ran on me (and it was for an internship) and it was intense. They managed to get my college transcripts and my GPA was clearly listed.
As for how stringent an employer is, there really is no answer. Big companies have hundreds of people competing for every slot, so its easy to find someone with a GPA in their desired range.

I have had a lot of jobs and have hired a lot of people I have never heard of or seen an employer acually take the time to check GPA they do check if you really graduated or not though.
Unless you are applying for a law firm. Or are trying to be a doctor this is not something to worry about.

I doubt it, although if they request that they may check.
I would go for it and put 3.5 on the app.
good luck The worst that could happen is that you don't get the job.
If you want to take the other path You could go to the boss with the application leave that spot blank and say I only had a 2.85 average...
Although everyone calls me a smart *** so...
throw a joke or two in and then tell him/her that you really need a good job like this and that you know you can be a valuable as-sett to their Company.
Good Luck

Some require college transcripts. If they mean 3.0, they mean 3.0.

They only verify if you have a degree or not. That's been my experience.
