The most life altering important experience I have ever had is not what you are probably thinking that I would say. It was Hurricane Katrina. I lost so much from that storm. Yet some how things were repaired that had been broken. Renewed friendships, one very important to me because after going through what we went through the realization was that petty differences just weren't worth holding on to. Friendship was what was important. My mother was also sick with cancer and died a few months after Katrina. Her bravery in the face of a double tragedy has had an enormous impact on the way I view things now.
I find it interesting to see how what seems like the end of the world as you knew it can at once seem terrifying and then work to repair so much after the "smoke" clears.

When I said that my life altering experience wasn't what you might expect, I was talking about my son. He is absolutely the coolest person in the world. His birth did alter my life, it made me a better person, but Katrina taught me to deal with things that I never thought that I could deal with. No power, no water, no gas etc...

Your life changing experience is something we all need to go through in our lives, in order to appreciate the little things we take for granted.
Although an act of nature, events like Katrina, Tsunamis, earth quakes, extreme blizzards...these and more make mother earth the biggest terrorist of them all.
When catastrophes like these happen (and oftentimes they appear at random), mankind is reminded that we do need each other.
Perhaps it's God's way of leveling the playing field. Past differences get forgotten as the problem at hand takes first priority.
Viewing the Katrina disaster on a national level, it eclipses 911 and makes people think, do we really need to be involved with other peoples affairs (most of the time, they don't want Americans around), or should our readiness be pointed primarily towards the land we inhabit and which we pay taxes to?
Mistakes like Katrina are what leave voters asking questions as to why our nation wasn't better prepared, and why in the wake of Katrina, not enough is being done to rebuild and fortify. Maybe global involvement makes us weaker when it comes to protecting Americans who pay these huge taxes to a government that is supposed to be more capable than it appeared to be during a (test run) situation like Katrina.
This perplexing problem requires big thinkers on the national level to come up with better plans and ideas. Voters should be more attentive to what the politicians plan on doing come next election. Then again, they often say so much and do too little.
In my life altering experience, I made a big decision to leave N.Y.C. when I lost my job of (almost) twenty years there, and divorce was taking a big toll. Although I had three children and thought my life was sealed after taking the vows and all that, I'm proud that I made a big move to a place I hardly knew because I felt nothing good was ever going to happen for me up there.
Twenty years later (will be come October), and having watched the big Towers come crashing down live on T.V., I thank my lucky stars for having the foresight to make a drastic move that indeed changed my life and made me more healthy and prosperous and actually a better father even though I made a distance from my children. (Ask all three of them what they think of me, and it's all positve). I paid my child support and then some, and still do.
I feel for the younger people in today's fast paced way of living. The jobs won't be what they used to be, nobody hears about big raises or promotions. I know my kids can't take care of me, but I thank all that is Holy that I am a perfectly healthy man in a world where few can boast as much.
And I thank this asker for a great question.
God Bless us all!

Oddly enough, it was joining an improv class in 1999. It led to meeting the greatest group of young comics, losing weight, doing standup comedy, getting a divorce, writing a book about my life, moving to Phoenix, and starting a new life.

Finding a religeon that works for me. for all of my life i seen myself as christian but my life seemed empty.so i came up with my own belief. i then met my fiance and she told me about a religeon called Wicca. I thought it was a satanic religeon, but i looked it up anyway and i found out it was exactly what i belived and i have been faithful to the god and goddess since then and my life is better because of them. By the way i'm not trying to convert if it sounds that way.

Giving a child up for adoption, it taught me many things about myself that I didn't know. It was the most difficult choice I will probably ever have to make.
