If you can find a woolly worm, supposedly the markings on it's back indicate what the winter will be like. For example, if the head was black, the middle was brown, and the tail was black, winter would hit hard earlier, be mild in the middle part, and be nasty at the end, too.
I've seen some correlation, but it's still hard to trust a bug.

I have been rescuing and caring for animals for many years. I can usually tell if winter is coming early by the way their fur fills in and gets real think. Its too soon to tell since they still seem to be shedding last years winter coat. I live in sout central Tn. It'll be a while.

Try the farmers almanac. It is a book that gives a general idea or prediction, if you will, of what the weather will be on a day by day basis...But just in case, gotcha boots and snow gear ready? How about a year 2000 survival pack? Snowblower? Better safe than sorry.
