It's funny I came across this question today. I am a senior early childhood major in college currently and in my class today, my professor asked us to list traits of a memorable/favorite teacher. The discussion ended up turning into all of us teacher candidates discussing how our favorite teacher influenced us to become educators. I had two teachers throughout my school career as well as my aunt who was a second grade teacher that shared experiences with me that made me want to become an early elementary teacher. All three of these women had similar traits, caring, compassionate, entergetic, interested in the students and nuturing. All three of them went above and beyond the call of duty. My favorite teachers attended activities and events that I was in (as well as my classmates) and they also gave positive reinforcement which is always a plus! As I am about to finish my college education, I have tried to base my philosophy of education and teaching styles around the three great role models I had. Thankfully there still are great teachers out there who inspire students. I hope one day to be as wonderful and great as an educator as my 4th grade teacher, 7th grade language arts teacher and my aunt, who was a 2nd grade teacher.

I had the same teacher for both 1st and 2nd grade. She was an older woman--Mrs. Brown. She was kind and helped me with my shyness. She was always looking out for me. She never had a hurtful word and was always smiling. Plus, she helped me learn how to read and write--and all the rest of it academically. She inspired me to become a teacher. I used to pretend that my dolls were my students and I always repeated what Mrs. Brown taught to them. I wanted to be a teacher since I was 6 years old--and I am fulfilling that dream today. This is my 14th year of teaching-_and I hope to inspire my 1st graders the way my 1st grade teacher inspired me.

I had some really good ones, who encouraged me to be the best I could be . They taught me study habits, communication skills, empathy, instilled a love of learning.
However I also had more bad teachers than good. They remained the bad examples of the type of teacher I never wanted to be. They were ignorant, couldn't get out of school fast enough, were nasty and I think a few of them had severe mental health issues.

I went to a Catholic Convent school and back in 1957, an English teacher introduced us to drama - unheard of in our very 'conservative' establishment. I was given the part of a rat in the Pied Piper which we enacted in the very grim school hall - but oh what fun it was, She also introduced us to wider and more challenging literature, encouarging us to express ourselves, read wonderful poetry (humour included) making the whole experience much more fun. Years later, I became an English teacher but then went on to teach children with Special Needs, never forgetting that all children deserve as wide an education as possible and that learning should for the most part be fun, fun,. fun!

I had two awesome examples of what teachers should be--my grandmother and my mom. Outside of the two of them, I was very lucky. I had excellent teachers who didn't coddle me or spoon-feed me, but made me work for my grades. They were funny or sweet or sarcastic, but never hurtful or bitter.
My junior and senior English teachers really stand out. I learned to LOVE English because of the two of them. They taught me the power of language and they taught me the power I wield with a pen.
Now, I'm a high school English teacher.

i'm studying to be a teacher right now, too. the best teacher i had was my high school teacher who really pushed me to always go for the "a", not just to pass. he also gave me really good life advice and never really seemed to make me feel inferior to him simply because of my age or the fact that i was really still unexperienced in life. he inspired me to go to college, to explore the world, and to never accept other people's judgments of me. he was a great teacher, as opposed to the other's that i have had that let me slide on by.
