Union is an act of uniting or joining two or more into one.
IE: political party, marriage, labor.
We know the political parties are well unionized, just look at there raises & benefits.
Marriage, well, half of them end in divorce today.
Labor, a union is only as strong as its members work at it TOGETHER.
Just look how strong the congress union, senator, CEO union, Lawyers, & accountants. Yes well all know they DON'T have a union, but there are enough of there laws in force to give them a great benefit plan. Most importantly they all have a contract with there employer, just like a union?
If we want to compare our labor to the worlds labor force, just think back to our own history of SLAVES.
Any one can blame another for business failing / losing market share like GM, Ford, Eastern Airlines, on Unions, cause it is the easy way out. Don't forget DELTA had NO UNION yet still filed for credit protection. Remember the Air Traffic Controllers, when their union tried to improve the working conditions, they were FIRED in 1981, yet even today the Air Traffic Controllers still have poor working conditions and equipment, yet congress still gets fatter than ever.Just look at who does the creative book keeping, gives CEO raises, Hires creative talent to Promote the GREAT products produced or innovate, or research and development teams. It is a combined effort in the end that makes a business, government or marriage work. People working together for the greater good.

Unions start out as a good idea... for the employee, not the company. Companies don't want to pay benefits, they HATE CBAs, and if they do something wrong, they don't want it pointed out to them. I have been a union member for 5 years now, and the only problem I have with it is the fact that represented employees that are incompetent, underqualified, or drug users are protected by the union... and it would take an act of god to get these leeches fired. But the GOOD employees have to fight tooth and nail to get what they deserve, and the company is pretty much against them, so this is when our union reps decide to run...

ken_rhp is correct. In their day unions helped the people. Today I feel it just Egotistic people living good off the workers' money. I believe this one reason we are seeing many companies move jobs overseas. They are tired of Government and Union control. If have worked at a few big companies and know many others that do. Companies want people who will work and are willing to pay for those people. But, when a government or union TELLS that company who they have to hire and then that person not want to work because they can Holler Discrimination or Abuse then what the Heck. The company moves to where people are willing to work. If, I ever had a company that HAVE to hire who the government says and pay what the union says, I would move where I can say, it my company!!!! This just my opinion and I am sure as Sh*t stinks some communist union/government dweeb will have something to say!!!!! But, that our Freedom of Speech!

They are good. They fight for employees rights, vacations, pay, and health care coverage.
Large companies who don't want/allow unions want control of their employees. These jobs are generally (but not always) lower-paying, so if the company wants to fire an employee for any given reason, the can, and without union interference. And they'll always be someone else to step up and take that job over.
These companies, I can only imagine, like the fact that there's nobody there to look out for and defend the employees if they believe they were wrongly fired. Unions are NOT perfect, but they are good, and every company who doesn't think so, no matter how great they are, need a change of heart.

If companies pay workers a fair and honest wage, unions would not be necessarry. Unfortunately, global market forces will render the american labor movement into extinction except for maybe the most highly skilled or sought after trades, such as Airline Pilots, Actors, Nurses, etc...
I believe this because it is too easy for a company to shut an entire plant down and outsource production overseas. For example, not a single major shoe manufacturer has a plant in the united states anymore. As a matter of fact, Brown Shoe Company of St Louis, the maker of Buster Brown, Naturalizer, and others, doesn't even make shoes anymore. They instead contract 100% of the manufacturing to plants in China, Brazil, Italy, and arrange for shipment to the US..

Unions are not inherently bad as they were needed when companies used to abuse their employees however many of unions have become so powerful that they abuse the companies to the point where the companies cannot survive. GM and Ford are prime example of that, gm went from number 1 car manufacturer to the shell that it is today because the union essentially forced gm to pay ridiculous wages relative the amount produced and health insurance costs.

This question leads to a long, complex answer for which there isn't enough time or space here. The history is pretty interesting. Of course companies portray unions as bad, because unions prevent the greedy corporate world from totally raping the working person! There are of course not so positive aspects to unions, but overall they are good and sadly diminishing in number. Corporate America is becoming our country's demise. GOD HELP US ALL WHEN UNIONS DISAPPEAR!

The republican spin device is attempting to convince everybody that unions value their individuals a fortune whilst a member is charged no extra advantageous than $30 a month. That union workers gets a commission a small fortune on a similar time as the non union member particularly gets with the help of. in reality there is everywhere from $6,000 to $10,000 a 365 days distinction. however the union worker additionally will pay extra for their well being care, places extra money into their social protection and could pay bigger taxes. the biggest joke is that the only reason unions exist is to get corporation vendors to spend money. Unions are transforming into rules exceeded inclusive of all homes might desire to have sprinklers put in and extra advantageous than one go out. those issues do value money, yet additionally they save lives. you additionally can thank unions for issues the 40 hour artwork week, the weekend, extra time pay, the minimum salary and paid holidays.

Well unions were originally established to set a minimum wage for that industry and to ensure workforce safety. Today those duties are handled by the government, safety by OSHA. Unions can coerce employers to maintain employees that are below par but are supported by the union. Many companies hate to let go of people even if they are unfit and they do it the legal way because unions may still take them to court.
