They are every bit as safe as the people that operate them.
Whiny, ignorant people can argue about how "you don't have any protection when you crash!", but they're the same ones that NEED antilock brakes, stability control, GPS navigation, side curtain airbags, all wheel drive and a DVD theater system just to drive a car. They need all that technology so they can eat, drink, smoke, shave, apply makeup, mess with their hair, read a book, beat their kids and talk on the cell phone. They incorrectly assume that it's the VEHICLE that makes you a safe driver instead of your BRAIN.
Any yahoo can drive a car; there's not much skill involved beyond turning a wheel and mashing two pedals. Motorcycling takes far more coordination and skill than most people think, and the ones that crash are the same ones that don't understand this.
While riding, you have to completely relearn everything you know about being a vehicle in traffic. In a stickshift car, you turn with both hands, shift with your right hand, clutch with your left foot and use the gas & brake pedals with your right foot.
On a motorcycle, you use both hands AND your body position to turn, and you have to countersteer to lean the bike into a turn. The left hand is for the clutch, lights, and turn signals, and your left foot shifts. Your right hand operates the throttle AND front brake, and your right foot runs the rear brake. Combine that with making sure that your tires are properly inflated and your front & rear suspension is properly set up for your weight & riding style.
It's a lot to practice, and when you get a novice on a fast bike that's too stupid to wear proper gear (helmet, jacket, pants, boots & gloves), they quickly become another statistic that perpetuates the stereotype that motorcycles are dangerous.
Use your head instead of your groin and they're just as safe as anything else on the road.

Motorcycles are safe. There are 3 limitations that involve motorcylcles.
Road limitations - How fast can I safely go on the road?
Bike limitiations - Is the bike capable of doing what I am doing?
Rider limitations - Am I capable given my skill level/confidence?
Exceed any one of these and you may be out of luck.
PS In most accidencts, the bike's limitations were not exceded.

It's like a gun, perfectly safe if it's in the right hands or away from humans. Bikes don't kill you, the people who can't ride them safely or have to go flat out everywhere do. Any other object using the roads is A, bigger than you, B, heavier than you and C, is far less worried about hitting you then you are about them sending you flying, so they are more dangerous, but you could leave the bike walk out of your house and get run over.......(only making the point)...... I waited till i was 24 before i got on a big bike, i knew i'd have killed myself in all honesty but luckily you grow up and see danger where you never thought it existed. Touch wood me and my bike are both A1 nearly two years later!!!.

The motorcycle is very safe when a prudent person is the one riding it. If a wacko is the driver, it is as safe as a plane driven by one of bin laden's friends, it might hit any building anywhere anytime.

SAFE?! As safe as the rider. Keep the rubber side down and your eyes wide open. And remember, practice, practice, practice ... and wear a helmet and protective clothing!
