In the past, I've noticed that whenever a major musical trend dies off (hippie music, disco, punk, new wave, glam rock, alternative) it seems like just before the end there's no specific artist that stands out anymore. Now that there's no Tupac or Puffy or other major new artist around, is this the end of rap? And what's going to take its place? I really hope it's not indie.

Rap is eating its self alive. Rap USED to be about distinguishing yourself as an individual. Now the sorry a$$ A&R people from the record companies just look for "cookie cutter" artists.
Here is the A&R represenatives idea of finding "new talent". "...Damn, Nelly just went triple platinum. I need to find a rapper just like him and I will get a Christmas bonus from the boss!"
As soon as Tupac was dead these A&R people went looking for someone STUPID ENOUGH to tie a bandana around their head just like Pac and call themselves a "Thug".
Then 5 million little wanna-be "Suburb Thugs" run to the mall and buy the crappy album by the Rappin' Retard of the Month.
That, my friends in a nutshell is what happens to ALL forms of music. The record companies (and MTV et. al.) force feed you that crap until you could care less if you ever heard it again.
NOW, open up and EAT YOU MINDLESS SHEEP!!!!

Punk didn't die.. it just went back where its supposed to be, underground. It's not supposed to be mainstream that's the whole point of it.. it dies on the radio, it thrives in the clubs.
I doubt rap is dying... it seems like all mainstream music right now is watered down. Everywhere I go all I hear is hip hop and emo anyway and to me it all sounds the same. Not that I particularly care, but I believe there will be another good/ talented rap artist eventually. What's really funny is that he or she probably won't get the recognition they deserve because they will be different from the mainstream and MTV and radio will be too scared to take a chance on them.
That's why I look for indie artists that aren't as recognized.. there's lots of talent out there and it sure isn't on the radio or tv.

Its not dying off, its rather being taken over by all of the nonsense rappers that have never thought about rap as an art form but instead rap about money, and girls. There really is no one to save it, although Puffy was never really an "artist" considering he has a ghost-writer. Black Star could save the genre, and if Game would stop beefing he could be a savior.

Rap isn't dying, its transforming and morphing into different styles like Hifee. The Hifee Movement is huge in California even though rappers like Snoop Dog don't support it. Snoop needs to realize that gangsta is on its way out because the hifee train is pulling through the nation.
