I don't think it's ever been illegal. If nudity is allowed on stage for artistic reasons, such as in a play, it can't really be limited to that.

Ever since strip clubs became legal and no longer private clubs. I was in one in Salt Lake City as long ago as 1979.

There was a lot of nudity in stage in America in the late 60s-early 70s. Remeber "Hair" or "O, Calcutta"?

"Equus" has a major extended nude scene in it
