Hi, you actually have a number of different options with that model. It should have included software with drivers that you will need to install on your computer. If you have a "firewire" port, that would be the most recommended as it has the fastest transfer rate. You will more than likely need to purchase a firewire cable (IEEE 1394) to connect the device. However, you do have an option of USB. I'm not familiar with this particular model, but some will allow you to transfer video using USB, some will only allow the transfer of still photos off the memory card. You were correct about the usage of the memory card. Lastly, if you have a video card with VIVO (video in, video out) ports, you can connect it to that. If you have none of the above, I would suggest the purchase of a PCI Fireware card with a couple of USB 2.0 ports on it. They can be had fairly reasonably, for generally less than $30 US. Remember though, once you have chosen the connection you will use, the software/drivers are the most important step to configuring how the computer will access the video.
Hope this helps!

Most modern camcorders will transfer via USB or Firewire.
Firewire is the fastest and most efficient method, if you do not have a firewire connection you can use the USB cable with the software you got with your camcorder.
There should be at least a USB cable and possibly a firewire cable in the box along with the software required to transfer movies from your particular camcorder.
Sadly using software from other camcorders or models often does not work, so use the software that came with your camcorder, if you do not have it you can purchase a new version from JVC's Website upon registration of your camcorder's serial number etc.

Should have come with a CD, usually JVC ship with Pinnacle Studio, which does the job. You will NOT need any other software, all DV Cam transfer software is compatible because it uses the DV over Firewire spec.
You might need a USB to USBb (mini). Some require firewire, & you would need a firewire card in your PC. get them on ebay for cheap, or spend more in BestBuy etc.
[edit]
Looking at this site it's a canadian model http://www.jvc.ca/en/consumer/product-detail.asp?model=GR-D375U
And came with a USB cable. And Software (Digital Photo Navigator (Win)
Get the Pinnacle software on ebay for next to nothing. It works well with my JVC.
Once you've mastered the pinnacle software you could progress to something like Adobe Premiere but.... that's another topic.
have fun.

Memory cards can be used for video also. Your JVC camcorder connects through firewire or usb. A usb port is rectangular while a firewire port may be either a 7 or 8 sided shape or a very small rectange. If you have a usb, the cord that is came with should have come with a cable that had one smaller side and one larger, rectangular side. Connect them, and Windows should detect it, but if it doesn't install drivers from the cd.

dear friend:
as per the model of this cam you should have "Composite (Video) • Audio (RCA) • FireWire / DV / i.Link • USB •" this can be connected to your PC but before doing that please install the softwear came along with the cam this is option 1
the other thing is you can have a card reader this works with "Memory Card Type SD Card for your cam" so it reads all the data video or photos recorded on it.
