That's a vague question, although, ultimately, it depends on your budget as well. Expensive doesn't mean efficient or irreplaceable. When buying a computer, custom made is the way to go. All components play a big role, from the processor, to video cards and memory and not to mention the hard drive read/write speed.
In parallel, one should also ask themselves: Whats the main purpose of purchase and what's the most essential need: i.e.: If you happen to be a video editor, then you might expect a high end PC, if you're simply surfing and doing word/image editing, then you're looking at a less powerful machine.

I'll break it down into 2 sections: Laptops and Desktops
Laptops: I've heard Acer is like #3 in the world. If you got the money you can get a macbook or macbook pro, they even run windows.
Desktops: I think that the best computer is the one that YOU build exactly how YOU want it, not with some trial crap, but that's just me.
Overall, it depends on several factors: Cost, Service, and Power. (I may have left some out)

My self and others have been very fond of the Sony Vaio's. Not the most expensive but they def kick some butt. Technology is changing so fast once you get a computer, a better one comes out. So id say if your going to go PC then go with a VAIO

As far as Dell, HP or Compaq for home use around the $600 range there is not much difference. If you want "power" and "Top of the line" Look at alienware. they are impressive and expensive. If you want one that is custom to your needs and a good balance in price and performance consider building one yourself or check the local Ma-Pa computer store and have them put one together for you.
