Quasimodo is a character in a book called "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo (Famous Dead Guy) He was a foundling raised by a kind abbe in the cathedral itself, after being abandoned by his mother on the church steps. The baby was horribly deformed, and so perhaps she could not bring herself to love him? Even the name given to the child is cruel, meaning half-formed. The abbe kept him mostly in the bell tower, and if he ever had any hearing, it was destroyed by the loud pealing of the bells. He could not speak, could not hear, and was so disfigured that he stayed away from most people except his mentor. But in adulthood, Quasimodo falls in love with the gypsy Esmeralda, and saves her from the guard by taking her to sanctuary within the church. Things go downhill from there, as the girl also was the focus of other, less innocent desires. Predictably, the "monster" had to die, paying a price for others' corruption. The real story line didn't have much happy ever after like the Disney version.

Quasimodo is the true story protagonist in the 1831 novel Notre Dame (Notre Dame de Paris in French) by French author Victor Hugo. Born with extreme physical deformities, including his infamous hump, Quasimodo was found abandoned on the doorsteps of Notre Dame on a Quasimodo Sunday (after which he was named) by the archdeacon Claude Frollo, who adopted the baby and brought him up to be the bell-ringer of the cathedral.
