you could go to the craft department of your local store and make something. they sometimes have wood boxes or wood trays that you could paint and add personal touches to. you also could find a sale rack of clothes and get something there. you could bake cookies, a cake or brownies.

Sometimes you can make something out of crafts that would be a happy surprise present. You could buy them a cd music; a good Book; Something like they are collecting {maybe their theme is nautical] so buy them a small lighthouse figurine; a box of candy; Get them a Walmart card for $20.00 but there are alot of ways to show that you cared!!!

If you know they like to read, a gift certificate for a book store might work. I know I'd like that because I could always add a few $'s to the $15 or $20 you gave me to buy a book, CD reading light, or any of the many things they have in book stores.

I would like a nice picture of you. I can buy the frame. 5X7 is ok I have a smart printer.
Color or black/white will do/
I think a picture says everything and is not expensive.
It's something that last in memories forever and is really you:):)/
Kidding but a picture to a friend or loved onei s the greatest. if it is for a female teen a dairy is nice.If for a boy the picture does it all.
.
ps ; if its for a male a nice poem in a frame with your picture and name will work well for him.

Paint and decorate a cheap wooden frame from a craft store, or buy a cheap one (Sometimes you can find nice ones at dollar stores) and stick a picture of yourself in it! If thats too egotistical for you, make it a picture of you with the person you are giving the gift to. That shows you value your friendship, at least.

Why not write them a heartfelt letter about how grateful you are for their friendship? Sometimes that sort of letter means far more than anything you could buy them.
However, if you're in Canada , get them two books of Tim Horton's certificates. Everyone loves Tim's certificates.
I'm sure in the US or elsewhere you can find certificates for restaurants or shops for under 20.00
