I do not know where you are attending school but there is probably a web site, like Blackboard or WebCT, where the professor will post his/her syllabus. It will have all of the required assignments and reading for the semester. Print it and take it to class. Also, don't forget to take a notebook. You will need that to take notes during lectures. The book & pen are a good thing. And, you might need a few #2 pencils and scantrons for the exams. Take a scientific calculator if you are taking a math or science class. One of those TI jobs...they are really good.
Good Luck with the semester.

A textbook, a few pens, and a notebook/tablet/some sort of paper are all good places to start. From there, individualize! Are you taking a math or science course? If so, a calculator might be a good idea. I also always carried a book (to read in case I was bored, or if a professor was a few minutes late to class), my journal (again, if I was bored), and a bottle of water. You may want to take a hoodie, if a certain classroom was cold (there were some rooms in some buildings that were boiling hot, while others were freezing cold at my college!). As you get further along in the semester, don't forget to bring a planner/calendar (lots of times professors will announce due dates of things)! Also, sometimes you can bring along some work for another class if things get boring, and do that instead. Not that I ever did that... hehe. Also, don't forget to turn your cell off. I personally always toted my things in a backpack around campus, but that is because I'm not a big fan of purses, and sometimes I wore clothes without pockets. Having a backpack keeps your hands free, too. But yeah, your first day will probably be an easy introduction/distrubtion of the syllabus sort of day. Good luck!

Yes, bring a backpack! Also, you should have TWO pens and TWO mechanical pencils. An appropriate tablet or notebook for taking notes and the textbook are also pretty much required. I strongly suggest you bring your student ID with you as well, you may be asked to present it, or be asked for your ID # (and you probably don't know it yet).

Bring what you will need, something to take notes with and on, you can bring a backpack to carry it in if you wish. You will find that there are not as many social norms in college. Bring what you want, really as long as you're prepared no one will care.
