Or can you buy a DVR box and hook it up through your cable?

I have dvr with my cable, and now my dad wants it too, but he gets the super basic cable (like 15 channels) and the dvr is not offered unless you get the digital cable. He is wondering if he can buy a dvr "box" and hook it up to record his shows.

No, they only provide you with a digital video decoder. Some companies do have DVR's, but you have to ask for them and pay extra.

You can get the same effect by purchasing a DVR, and connecting it inbetween your digital cable encoder, and your TV.

You must have a digital cable box to get DVR. You must get it through your cable provider, or buy TIVO.

Yes you have to get DVR through your cable company or you can get TIVO from Wal-mart or Best Buy.

Hook your cable into the DVR and cable to your TV. It works fine you don't need to get it from your cable company. I bought mine from Cosco.
