The country is called United States of America, for some reason we call it United States or US. But using the Mexico reasoning the country should be called America, therefore their citizens Americans.
Mexico's official Name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, United Mexican States, but they are better known as Mexico.
So that should answer your inquiry.

The inhabitants of the English colonies on the Eastern Seaboard of North America were called 'Americans' long before Independence. The name has just stuck and spread with the country.
Your beef is with the French and Spanish who chose to call their colonists by other names.

I don't uderstand why people think we are such egotists for referring to ourselves as Americans. The name of our country is, after all, the United States of American. We usually shorten it to America. That doesn't mean we aren't aware of the rest of the world. It's just our name, and I don't see how our name suddenly means we are ignorant, big-headed freaks. Not all of us are religious nutcases, you know, and not all of us voted for Bush. In fact, his approval ratings are some of the worst ever.
