The Southern Colonies became overly dependent upon a plantation economy that seemingly required Slavery. Actually slavery was a false solution to the labor problem but because a small cliche 'owned' a lot of people and since that ownership was viewed as their wealth they were loathe to give up those slaves without financial consideration. The Northerners took the cowards way out. They gradually emancipated the slaves from their States once America became a Nation, and since the problem was 'down there,' 'in the South,' they treated slavery as a 'peculiar institution' and did their best to ignore it. It became impossible to ignore - - - having embraced Slavery as 'needed,' the Southern Leadership, mainly owners of Plantations of Cotton & Tobaco & Rice & Indigo and Brokers of Cotton & Other Commodities, they became super paranoid whenever they perceieved a threat to their cherished instititution, they raised the argument of States Rights, and argued that only a State had the right to decide what was right & wrong within it's borders. Meanwhile the North pursuing a Society that rewarded initive & innovation became both an agricultural & manufactering giant and so when the issue came down to a not so Civil War the society that said Slavery was an Immoral Evil triumphed over a Society that said a State had a Right to Keep People in Bondage. I am not a scholar, but my guess is quite a bit of difference. They could have been two countries as far as I can tell. It is not as pronounced now. But in the 60's when I was a tyke and visited relatives there, it was very different.
