Basically, Trend Micro Pc-Cillin Internet Security is all around the best.
Heres how I'd rate the antivirus programs, Ive used 'em all.
McAfee
-----------
Antivirus - 3/5 (rarely deletes viruses but detects well.)
Firewall - 4/5 ( too overprotective, intrusive)
Overall - 3.5/5 ( easy to use, great detection rate, poor delete)
Symantec Norton
-----------------------
Antivirus - 2/5 (poor detection, great deletion)
Firewall - 5/5 ( blocks well, non intrusive)
Overall - 3/5 (nice interface, great firewall, antivirus needs work)
Kaspersky
-------------
Antivirus - 4.5/5 ( Great at detection and deletion)
Firewall - 3/5 ( Blocks well, not all, intrusive)
Overall - 4/5 ( Great choice, few false positives)
Trend Micro Pc-Cillin
----------------------------
Antivirus - 5/5 ( Few to no false positives, great detection.)
Firewall - 3.5/5 ( Great, but no flexibility in blocking programs)
Overall - 5/5 ( Easy to use,frequent updates, awsome AV/FW)
Trend Micro, in my opinion, is the best for your buck.

I have been using AVG free Edition for over three years, and it does have Email and Real time virus protection*. I have not had a virus while using AVG and I have 13 computers which 11 of them use the free edition of AVG. I have installed it on over 100 computers I have worked on along with Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, MS Defender, Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster, Ewido, and a² **.
There are several other very good antivirus** programs that are freeware but also have subscription version if you need more features. If you have money to spend there are several very good subscription AntiVirus programs.
The AV is only one part of a well protected system. Every system should have several layers to protect against all malware.
1) Fully updated OS
2) Antivirus with latest definions, with real time protection ***.
3) Several Antispyware program with real time protection ***.
4) Where possible a router with NAT ****.
5) Routinily run online security scans.

McAfee is good, but pricey. Kaspersky is generally rated middle of the field.
Spy-ware, etc: Ewido.com, ad-aware (www.lavasoft.com), spybot search and destroy (www.security.kolla.de) Google a websearch specific toolbar too.
Anti-virus, there are two free ones that are superior: www.grisoft.com has AVG, and www.free-av.com has avira anti-vir. You can only run ONE anti virus at a time, but can run multiple spywares. Download and install these programs, and boot your computer to safe mode (hit f8 on a re-start BEFORE windows comes up). Run them from safe mode to clean an existing infection. Good luck.

I personally prefer a program called NOD32. It's very good. Norton, Symantec and McAfee are terrible anti-virus programs. Anti-Vir isn't bad either, and it's free! I currently use the Anti-virus program from CA E-Trust.
