I am wanting to get started in composting and have leaves and grass clippings for now. Is this enough or should I add household scraps? Also i just have it in a pile in the backyard. Will this work? any details I should know?

yes you can, but there is no reason not to add vegetable scraps,( no meat), to your compost pile. While some sort of container is advise able, a pile will work almost as well, just remember to turn it over every three to seven days. Also to speed up the process you can add a small amount of lime every two to three weeks.

Grass clippings tend to compact. A compost pile needs oxygen to stay stink free. If you mix the clippings and leaves you can add kitchen scraps. (Do not add grease or meat waste at all.)Composting is so easy and the right thing to do. Get a book from the library or a pamphlet from your extension service.

Leaves and Grass are O.K.
Most people find a corner of the yard, and every so often add some sand and fertilize with Miracle Grow, It helps the pile decompose faster!
I will say that the only problem with HOUSE HOLD SCRAPS is the variety of friends that you will acquire:
Moles
Voles
Mice
Skunks
Raccoons
Squirrels
Chipmunks
Small Bears
Big Deers+800lbs.
Oh Yes, field rats, and Prairie dogs
All depends on where you live!

Leaves and grass will work because they decompose pretty fast, but most people put them in a corner of their yard or fence them in. Later you can add scraps.
