people should be very careful to what they call each other, it may have a life time affect. I was called ugly by some people that hurt my feelings when I was growing up. I could get over that and move on, but when my own mother called me ugly when she came home drunk I could never forget, and it made me wonder. It took a lot from my self esteem, and today 40 years later I'm shy about my appearance and some what backwards.

Fairly common -- and yes, they did say this. It did NOT affect my self-esteem at all - because I KNEW that I was MORE than just outward appearances -- and believe me, I DID succeed in ways that those who made fun of the way I look NEVER could.

MY MOTHER IN LAW!!! What did it do to my self esteem? Man, it hit the bottom!! I was only 20 years old, doing my best and all I ever heard was such things as, "Too bad you look the way you do, you have such a pretty face!" I was fat. Then later, it was "Were your arms that large when you married my son?"
Following pregnancy she said, "Well, you legs are as big as watermelons!"
How did I deal with it. I NEVER, EVER had a harsh word for the woman and took it all on the chin, suffering miserably in private. It nearly ruined my marriage.
When she got very old, guess who took care of her? ME. Know why? I was the only one who had worked to get over the insults and had finally found the strength to just tell her NOT to say these things to me or mine. She kinda respected that. WHO KNEW?

Some people made fun of that fact that I had an oily nose when I was younger. I just had oily skin and I still do. Expect for now I can treat my skin. It bothered me sometimes. But never really got be angry. I just ingorned it best I could. Plus in reality I'm alot prettier than the people that used to pick on me.

Some kids at school in grade 6. i had really bad hair when I was younger. It didn't affect me that much. I had enough friends who weren't like that. Plus I had a boyfriend so not everyone thought I was ugly.

I was never really socially accepted in high school, and it made it really hard for me. not often but a few times i was picked on or made fun of. i do have low self esteem and i do feel like if i am in a scenario like high school... (like in large groups of ppl, when i walk into college, even the mall) i feel like ppl are looking and judging me and i cant seemto shake it off.

In a term of personal sense yes. In a term logically is not, cause when they make fun about it, that tell me indrectly they never know and they may be too stupid to know about real life, on the contrary it makes me feel better about myself than before.

yeah they call me fat well it affected my self esteem but you see now i dont let others get to me, i can change without prior prompting , i have never been called ugly and i would never do that to others especially when they can hear it, but i once was called fat, but i have changed due to my will and not because others told me to do so
