After you've been dating for 5 years, you both have completed your college education, and you both have been working at your jobs for at least 2 years, and you've received a report back from a PI that says he's been honest with you. Then it's probably safe to start "talking" about it.
Don't be in a rush to wear the dress and diamond. You sound kind of desperate which tells me you need to start living your life for you - just a hunch though.

I was seeing my boyfirend for 2 years before I though"OK, we should be talking/thinking about it". It depends on your age though like some of the other posters said. If you want to bring it up that is entirely up to you but I wouldn't bring it up before 18 months of dating.
