With rents so high in Manhattan, what makes it so worth living there? New Yorkers swear they'd never want to live anywhere else, but what makes it so great? There are bars, restaurants, etc in every major city... and the majority of people can't afford to go to a Broadway show that often anyway. So how is it actually different from life in Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas, or any other major city?

I haven't lived in new york but being a frequent traveler to NYC especially Manhattan, i can understand why its so expensive. Its the epicenter of most 21st century industries i.e. finance (wall street), advertising, fashion and music. Its also got one of the most active nightlife's anywhere in the world. It really is the city that never sleeps. Its a tiny island and with such a high demand for such limited space well its just economics, limited supply and high demand cause prices to go up.
