Since from the beginning, it was to be man's job to till the land, maybe a beard was to be protection from the elements.

The difference in evolution came about because men were the predominant hunters of the male/female society of humanity. Men were the hunter providers and needed facial hair to give them camoflage in the brush when hunting. An additional advantage of long hair and beards was the protection offered from flying insects that bit or stung the sensitive areas around the neck, ears, and face.

I believe it's due to the fact that during the pre-historic period it was a visual symbol of maturity and could serve to attract women. It also helped to camouflage while men were out hunting.

It's for gender identification. Many animals have specific gender characteristics for this purpose. Lions for instance. The male has a mane, the female doesn't.
In mammals, these differences seem to be more for the purpose of like gender, identifying like gender for competitive purposes. For instance, male deer (bucks) have antlers which they use to identify each other and compete with, for the right to procreate with the females.
In humans, this may have been how ancient tribal competitors determined whom to kill, and whom to capture.

As paul has said here in his answer, that women wear them down lower in their pubic areas. But I won't go with that answer. I'll tell you what is the most horrific site to see.......Indian women have the most hairy lips and hairy chins, okay? They don't think about what they look like on the outside...they don't shave nor cut theirs hairs off with peelers. UGGGGH! how ugly is that?!?!?!?!?

I really don't know but I would think that it would have something to do with a visual signal of sexual maturity.
