Basicaly whatever country you are in you have to abide by that country's laws. If you legaly married someone in another country, that doesn't make you "un-married" to them in the U.S. If you married two people in a country where it is legal, then moved to the U.S. I'm not sure how that would work. Probably the U.S. would recognize only the person you married first, and not the second person, as your spouse.

Wow, interesting question!

I don't know where polygamy is legal, but it is my guess (and it's only a guess) that before allowing any type of temporary or permanent immigration into the US, it would be made clear that only ONE marriage would be recognized here.

Of course, if you are just visiting the US, no one would really care how many wives you had. Nevertheless, if anything should come up while you're here visiting, I'm sure no government agency in the US would recognize multiple marriages, and would simply deal with some representative of your home country, rather than several wives.

***EDIT***
And the reason it's illegal here is because of people like devil_queen, who not only know what is *right* for every individual in the entire world, but is also qualified to diagnose others as "sick," based purely on their marital status.

First if you marry in one country you are married in all countries.
Yes you are still married but if you live in the US as a critizen and not on a visiting visa you are committing a crime. You need to divorce all the extra wives but the first one, she is legal one, the others will never get your benefits, pension or any of your estate. The law will only see the first wife as your only wife.

If you get married in one country you are married. Moving to another country does not nullify your marriage. If you are married to two women no matter WHERE you got married it is considered bigamy in the United States and is not legal. I suggest you seek divorces from ALL of your wives before you try to get married here in the U.S.

The second one becomes null and void.

But yes, you can be married to different women only each in another country. It's considered polygamy in religion, not governmental law.

It is interesting to note that while marrying more than one person such as one man and more than one women is illegal, it is not illegal for a consenting husband and wife to have as many live-in partners as they wish providing they do not try to marry or represent themselves in the public as married. Weird but true.

It is illegal in all countries who are signers of the Haug Treaty. It should be noted that if the birth rate of male children continues to drop, than that may change.

No, you must divorce your first wife before you marry another. That is polygamy, and it is illegal in all civilized countries.

illegality depends upon the law of the country. But it's definitely immoral.
