The cause of your shake when you step on the brakes is the rotors or drums on your car are warped. At 42,000 miles I would replace the front brakes and resurface or replace the rotors before you go on the long trip.

chances are the rotors at one point got really hot from riding the brakes allot at one time, that caused the rotors to warp from the extreme heat, and when the warped rotor travels passed the caliper that is stationary, it causes the wheels to shake, in turn causing the steering wheel to shake as well. it is extremely hard to check for warping, so replacing them would be a good option. around a $100.00 dollar job, depending on the shop you take it to..

either turn (repair) your front rotors or purchase new ones. if you purchase news ones, do not get the cheap ones or you will be having this same problem in a few weeks. cost wise, turning the rotors will cost about $30, new rotors will cost about 80 to 90 dollars. i would go back to dealer and get the new ones. i have had this problem several times and i know it very annoying. good luck.

Disc brakes. You probably have warped or worn rotors on your disc brakes.

the Impala model is notorious for tearing up the rotors....premature disc pads are a result too!

sounds like you have warped disc brake rotors, they may be able to be machined if not you will have to replace them . ask your mechanic.

Yup...sounds like warped rotors. They'll do that if they've overheated.
