It's been almost 10 years and out of the blue I'm having one episode of heavy bleeding and some spotting since (all in the last week). Of course the big C word has popped into my head. Comments? Advice? Causes? Thanks.

You're right, it is abnormal to have vaginal bleeding after nearly 10 years of cessation of menses. Do not hesitate to go to a gynecologist asap for evaluation. In post-menopausal women, vaginal bleeding could be caused from endometrial atrophy, meaning that the lining of the uterus is drying and shrinking, or it could be related to endometrial cancer. My best advice is for you to see your doctor, don't delay.

Depending on your age, some women do have spotting as well as heavy bleeding in between periods. You could also have the early onset of menopause. I have a friend who is 36 and this was also her problem. She did finally go to the doctor and get her pelvic and pap smear done, as well as some sort of a vaginal ultra sound. they did put her on some sort of meds and it cleared it up. I would say you should really go see your gyno, and then always a second one for advice just don't let one doctor know you have seen the other doctor so they don't just agree with each other to agree.. they do that some times.

When you say "it's been almost 10 years", do you mean since you had a period? (I.e. are you post-menopausal?)

If so, I would definitely get it checked out. Although there are plenty of things it could be, it IS unusual to bleed after you have finished menopause. It could be nothing, or it could be uterine or some other cancer of the reproductive system. I definitely wouldn't ignore it, though.
