It's called "psychological projection" or "Freudian projection." Here's a definition:
"A defense mechanism in which the individual attributes to other people impulses and traits that he himself has but cannot accept. It is especially likely to occur when the person lacks insight into his own impulses and traits." ( http://www.heretical.com/sexsci/bpsychol.html )

Most of the time they're just too embarrassed to admit that they like it, so they try to make anyone who admits to liking it look bad.

Why did people think, at one time, that the world was flat, or that the sun revolved around the earth? We all know the answer to that. Just sheer ignorance, and most of it willful.
