If Schiavo was a human until the end, then the characteristic is solely biological..

And it can't be the limbs because humans without limbs would still be humans..

Ears, eyes, nose, might be missing, and we're still humans..

So, I'd go with somewhat a head and a torso..

One thing we do differently than animals, is our inate ability towards genocide. Other animal species may murder the same species over territorial fights, or in desperation for lack of food. But we are the only species on this earth capable of genocide.

One theory that has yet to be proved, as more studies are needed, is that Humans are the only ones with complex verbal language, we are, however, the only species with complex written languages.

I am not sure that there is one defining attribute of humans with the exception of being created in God's image. Both Plato and Aristotle tended to believe that reason defines man. However, Aristotle also speaks of humans as social beings. No doubt, the difficulty in describing humanity derives from the fact that we are (as Jean Paul Sartre says) homo absconditus.

There is only one thing and that is the ability to determine if something is the right or wrong thing to do. It's called a conscience. Animals don't stop to think before they kill and eat their dinner. People will know that it's wrong but might do it anyway. It's not the choice, it's how you arrive at the choice.

You will find the definition of what is human by studying the humanities: art, music, literature.
This is their purpose - to distill from our individual traits those common aspects of ourselves that are shared human traits.
