They were in alphabetical order at one time as witnessed by the niddle row F G H _ J K L are, I know it is missing the I .

The Qwerty Keyboard if just easier to touch type with.

The Qwerty keyboard got is name from the first 6 letters on the upper left side.

The reason that they are in the order that they are is both for ease of reach AND so that the arms on a munual typewriter wouldn't get caught up in one another.

The arrangement has more to do with which letters are used in what sequence. Manual typewriters had long arms that swung up to the paper roller and smacked the paper. If you typed too fast, they would get crossed with one another and get stuck. The keys were arranged to make it less likely that two of the arms that could cross would go up together.

It's not needed now, but that's what everyone knows. If you never learned the keys this way, you could type just as fast in any other arrangement.

The 'qwerty' keyboard is intended to make the letters easier to find by the stronger fingers for right-handed people in English if they use 'touch' style typing, which requires not looking at the keyboard while you type.

there were put that way by some very smart person who knew about the repetitvness of letters and put the letters that we use most within easy reach and the less used letters in a harder postion on the keyboard...

if you can touchtype then you will know why...

it took me about 15 seconds to type this...!

I think they are arranged on order of which letters appear in words the most.

They're located by how frequently they appear in text. Your starting positions when typing are spaced by the most common close together, with the least likely farther out.
