Depends on how much money you can spend.

Some of the best telescopes are made by Televue (refractor) and Questar (catadioptric-mixed mirror and lens). But they're _very_ expensive.

Orion has a reputation for good inexpensive telescopes. If you can't spend much, that would be my first choice.

Celestron and Meade are in between. Pretty good, not really expensive. As you can tell by other answers, quite popular. But not the best, not as good as Televue or Questar.

Whatever you do, don't buy a telescope that's advertised by its' power. Sure sign of cheap and bad.

For real quality, don't get anything other than equipment made by Celestron, Inc or Meade Instruments.
